Tourist in Syria, Crimes Against Humanity Daraa

Tourist in Syria, Crimes Against Humanity Daraa: Is this your 1st call to Syria, the passport control man asks me. No, I say him; I came here once earlier over a 10 ago. He stamps my passport. I had been very lucky to get a Syrian visa this time. The travel advice wasn't to call. The Syrian regime is very wary of foreigners, fearing that journalists and spies are inflaming the situation additional. I collect my bag and walk through customs, passing a poster, of modest size, of President Bashar al-Assad with the words in Arabic proclaiming: "Leader of the youth, desire of the youth." I jump in a taxi. I ask the driver how is things in Syria. Things are good, he assures me. There's been some difficulty around the nation, but things are OK in Damascus. As we drive, we chat. He points out the area where Druze lives. With his hand, he waves in another direction to wherever Palestinian refugees live, then over again to where Iraqi refugees live. Alawites are over there and in villages. Christians these way and in villages Sunnis are around sixty-five percent of the population. Kurds live in the north. A lot of different folkses live in Syria. I ask him how he knows who someone is or whether they are Sunni or Shiite. He tells me that he doesn't know and it doesn't interest him to know: there's no sectarianism here in Syria. We pass Damascus University. Outside there are lots of flags and images of Bashar and his deceased father. Across the city, the Syrian flag is flying strong and pics of the president are omnipresent. As I drive through al-Umawiyeen Square, I see lots of young men and women gathering holding Syrian flags. It isn't a demonstration, a Syrian tells me, and it’s a celebration a celebration of the regime. After, I see the event on TV. It's made the international news. 10s of thousands of Syrians have come out to al-Umawiyeen Square to show their support for President Bashar al-Assad in a lively celebration which admits pop singers and fireworks. When I had called previously, the city had been filled with huge images of Hafez al-Assad; and Bashar had been studying ophthalmology in London. The death of his elder brother, Basil, in a car crash, propelled him back into the family business of ruling Syria. In the evening, I stroll down the street to a restaurant. It is very modern and western. All you can eat sushi for $20. I try to read my emails on my blackberry. I switch between 2 different networks. But can only receive GPS not GPRS. The restaurant claims to have WiFi. I ask the waiter. There is WiFi, he tells me, but it's not working at the moment. Internet access is limited. I walk through souq al-hamdiyya in the old city of Damascus. It is a wide, pedestrianized street, two-story high, and covered. It's buzzing with life. Store owners sit outside their shops, trying to entice potential customers. Traders sell their wares down the middle of Wall Street. Walking with the flow of folks, I emerge to find the Umayyad Mosque direct in front of me. I go to the ticket office, pay the entrance fee for foreigners and collect a hooded grey cloak to cover myself. The cloaks come in three sizes. A woman sitting there directs me towards the smallest size. The cloak stinks and I wonder when it was final washed and how a lot of women have had to wear it in the sweltering summer heat. I put the cloak on over my dresses, pulling up the pointed hood to ensure my hair is covered. I enter the Umayyad mosque built on the site of a shrine dedicated to John the Baptist looking like a member of the Ku Klux Klan except dressed in grey, and carrying my shoes in my hand. I wander into the covered area where hundreds of folks are praying, men in one area, and women in another. I walk out to the courtyard. In one area, a group is seated on the ground. One man is kneeling, raising his arms, weeping "ya Hussein." The others follow suit, tears flowing, looking quite distraught.Tourist in Syria, Crimes Against Humanity Daraa:

The rapper and his production company filed for legal action against the company in June 2011 after realising that the track which had previously been allowed to feature in commercial for Audi's competitor, Chrysler, was being used for the German version of the advert for Audi A6 Avant as well, but without his consent, Contactmusic reported.

The hip-hop star also claimed that the Audi ad had stark similarities to his own for Chrysler, which depicted him driving through his hometown of Detroit, Michigan behind the wheel of a new Chrysler 200.

Eminem asked the judges to cease the order issued to the car giant as the two parties had reached a consensus, but the terms of agreement have not been disclosed with it being understood that Audi bosses have vowed to donate to the Imported from Detroit charity.

Wanted to be a war journalist: Minisha Lamba

Bollywood actress Minisha Lambha on Thursday (28 July, 2011) visited Kolkata to promote the new entertainment channel from UTV group called UTV STARS. IBNS correspondent Arnab Chakraborty caught up with her after the event for an informal chat.
Minissha Lamba, journalist

How do you feel about UTV STARS?

I think it's going to be great. I think we are going to come a lot closer to the people. Our lives are not really that extraordinary so half the things we tell to the press a made up. I think people are going to know about our really boring lives. I believe they will get to know us better.

Do you think there will be privacy issues?

Well our media still has a lot of respect for privacy and there is a great ethic code still present. Compared to the west we have a lot more privacy. So I don't think there'll be any such problem.

Recently you are part of Bheja Fry 2 and the film didn't do so well in the box office. Why do you think that it was so?

Why do you say that? The film made money and the producer is ‘malamal’ (very rich) right now. He's yet to take me out to dinner as a treat.

Still what was the problem with the movie? It didn't attract a cult following like Bheja Fry.

I guess we are used to a lot of cult movies right now and when Bheja Fry came out it was a comedy and everybody was amazed by how it was shot in one room. Today for a film to become a cult film you need for it to be more than a comedy. It has to be a film that addresses society. It has to be a film that dealt about very serious things but the way that its shot has to be a cult film. It is very difficult for comedies to become cult films.

Tell us about your upcoming films.

There is a film coming called ‘Hum Tum Shabana’. It's also comedy directed by Mr. Sagar Ballary. There is another film called ‘Joker’ and then there is ‘Zilla Ghaziabad’. ‘Hum Tum Shabana’ will release in September and the other two will release next year.

Tell us about your experience at Cannes film Festival. How was it?

It was beautiful and I think in the West they have really got the red carpet thing packed and they know how to do it beautifully out there. So to experience the original place of Cannes, which is the largest festival in the world, was great. But having said that I would like to add that we in India also do the red carpet premieres very well. The only difference is that our journalists don't wear tuxedos behind the line which is the uniform there.

Personally what genre of films you like?

I love dramas and thrillers.

And what about directors? Who are your favourite directors?

Michael Bay is one of my favourite directors. Tony Scott is another director I absolutely love and Steven Soderbergh too.

Which are the directors in India with whom you would like to work?

I would love to work with a lot of newcomers. I will like to work with Dibakar Banerjee and Rajkumar (Gupta).

Is it true that you really wanted to be a journalist?

Ya that is very true. In fact I wanted to be a war journalist. I wanted to go off to places like Bosnia and Chechnya and Israel. Acting is something that was not planned. It really happened like an accident. But my parents are more than happy that film happened so I wouldn't go to some corner and be bombed out.

So what do you feel about coming to Kolkata?

I love Kolkata. I love coming back here. I love the place, the people, the food and also the architecture. I love the old world feel of the city. I also love the Bengali language as it's very sweet.

So any plans of being in a Bengali film?

First it would take me five years to learn the language. But yes maybe someday. Though I have watched Bengali films of Rituparno Ghosh.

Lady Gaga's baby wear range includes controversial meat dress

London, July 30 : Lady Gaga has launched a new line of baby wear based on some of her most shocking costumes, and it includes the controversial meat dress she wore at last year's MTV Music Awards.
Lady Gaga, meat dress

The 25-year-old star's weird range includes the 35-pound meat dress, which is now on display at the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.

Next on her fashion line is a dress made out of Muppet Show character Kermit the Frog, and the bubble dress worn throughout her Fame Ball tour in 2009 is also seen on one of the babies.

Last but not the least is a green sparkly leotard, which she wore while performing with Elton John at the Grammy Awards last year.

Shocked by her fashion choices Jimmy Kimmel asked her how she came up with the ideas for her costumes.

"When you're bed... it's pretty simple what guys want isn't it? Sometimes you put some thought into it, sometimes you put no thought," the Daily Mail quoted her as saying.

"I know actors always say this about each other but he really is lovely," Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

"I worked with him on 'Brokeback Mountain' and then five years later on 'Love and Other Drugs'; he was a great guy then and still is. He's a real person.

"That's a weird compliment, but someone's as good looking as he is, with as much adoration from such a young age, they could easily be a nightmare, or stuck-up jerk. But he's a good guy," she added.

Emma Watson 'incredibly flattered' to be new face of Lancome

Washington, July 30 : Emman Watson has revealed that she is “incredibly flattered” to have been asked to be the new face of Lancome, as it has so much history and class.

“I wanted the campaign’s love story to be about that. There’s something modern but also timeless about that kind of story,” she added.

The actress was chosen to become the new face of Lancome because she brings a “fresh spirit” to the brand.

Salman aims to outdo all Khans by dancing

By Subhash K Jha,Mumbai, July 30 : With his newly acquired confidence as a box office champ, Salman Khan is now working on proving himself as the best dancer among all the Khans.

Salman Khan, bodyguard,dance

This was his brief to his current favourite choreographer Mudassar Khan, when they started shooting the track "Desi beat" for his upcoming "Bodyguard".

"Salman is hell-bent on proving he's the best dancer among the Khans. When 'Desi beat' was being planned, Salman very clearly told Mudassar that he wants to be the best dancer among all the Khans. Salman shot the song like crazy," a source says.

As if getting his favourite choreographer was not enough, Salman also got on board a song director to shoot the number.

The concept of a song director joining the choreographer for a star is still novel in Bollywood. Sanjay Leela Bhansali served as a song director in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's "1942: A Love Story" even as Farah Khan was the choreographer.

And now Salman, we hear from reliable sources, wants to patent this collaborative style of shooting a song.

"Salman will work simultaneously with a choreographer of his choice and a dance director in all his major song and dance numbers," says the source.

When asked about the "Bodyguard" number, producer Atul Agnihotri confirmed: "We got Mudassar and also a song director, Sumit Dutt. The number rocks."

The collaboration that started with "Dabangg" where Salman gave Mudassar the chance to choreograph the song "Humka peeni hai", has now reached a stage where Salman insists on bringing his blue-eyed choreographer in all his films as a lucky mascot. Looks like, Salman has found his own version of what Saroj Khan used to be for Madhuri Dixit.

For the "Bodyguard number", the source adds: "Mudassar was told to take Salman out of his comfort zone as a dancer. Salman has never done this before. This is the first time Salman has followed a choreographer's instruction to the minutest detail."

'Cowboys and Aliens' an adrenaline rush

By Satyen K. Bordoloi ,Film: "Cowboys and Aliens"; Director: Jon Favreau; Actors: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde; Rating: ***
Cowboys and Aliens, Daniel Craig, olivia wilde, harrison ford

There isn't much to say about a film where before the protagonist even utters his first word, he has killed three strong men. Such a film becomes a wish-fulfillment for action and adrenaline junkies. Though "Cowboys and Aliens" fulfils that promise in the first half, the cliched plot progress and execution mars the second half of the film.

Jake (Daniel Craig) wakes up in the wilderness of the "Wild Wild West" without no recollection of his past and with a strange gadget stuck to his left wrist. As he finds more about his murderous past, there are things much more brutal lurking in the night sky then men who shoot before they speak. When these rugged cowboys realise that these aliens plan to take over the world, they ready up for a fight even though their pistols are no match for superior alien weaponry.

The first-half of "Cowboys And Aliens" is indeed a thrilling ride through a landscape that has been dealt with before in countless films. But director Jon Favreu's steady pace, and the addition of a seemingly magical bracelet on the wrist of the protagonist, adds a different dimension to this familiar landscape. Here, though the name, and obviously the bracelet, foreshadows the arrival of aliens, the tension and mystery is palpable.

Sadly, once the mystery about the aliens and their purpose on Earth is revealed, the film takes a nosedive towards a land of cliches and barely manages to crash-land itself in the end. A little more attention during the writing stage would have ironed out a lot of these flaws and let the film live out its potential.

The other major problem with the film is that many things are left unexplained: like the fitting in of huge aliens in small ships, and the true identity and form of a crucial character. People in the film are happy with the simple explanation by this being that it is 'from beyond the stars'. It is as if Stephen Spielberg is vain enough to believe that before his alien films, there was no curiosity on anything that is not of this earth.

The film is based on a little known comic book of the same name that has been modified extensively to fit the silver screen, most visible of which is the change of silver to gold that the aliens are after.

Hollywood seems to be in a blind rush to acquire any story with the potential to shoot and blow massive things up and making a mess of a mixed-genre film. In this case, you have in your hand a mystery-sci-fi-action-thriller. Whether your adrenalin is pumped by it, or you're disappointed, will totally depend upon your propensity towards these genres.

"You have to accept yourself though, and accept that there will always be something to worry about. It's much easier just to accept things," she added.

One of the series' main attractions for Spear, who spent much of her childhood on her father's ranch in her native Maracaibo, was the chance to play a character living close to nature.

"I remember that before they offered me the project, I told my dad that I longed to be back on a ranch, in touch with nature and surrounded by animals. I needed that smell of wet grass after the rain and feeling that wild creature we have inside," she told EFE in a telephone interview from Colombia, where the series is in production.

In this adaptation for television of a novel by Laura Restrepo, the 27-year-old actress and model plays Amanda Monteverde, an innocent young girl who, after a family tragedy, flees with her three little sisters to a village where she meets three very different men.

There she has a love affair which is, as the novela's title suggests, wild and pure. And, naturally, full of drama and exciting twists and turns of the plot.

"The role is very rich, very nuanced. And I didn't get it by chance - I felt it was the universe that sent it to me," the actress crowned Miss Venezuela 2004 said.

The 27-year-old singer - who was found dead at her London home last Saturday - had secretly penned and laid down the vocals for three tracks, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

"What a way to remember Amy. We want her to be known for her talent and not her drug addiction. To have one of her songs used in the next film would be the perfect memorial to her," said a source.

"They were really a work in progress but she'd laid down the vocals and had guitar and drums as an outline. It wouldn't take much to tighten it up into a finished product," he said.

Winehouse's spokesman Chris Goodman said there is "plenty" of material but there have been no discussions about releasing anything.

Washington Redskins Trade Albert Haynesworth Is In The New England Patriots

Washington Redskins Trade Albert Haynesworth Is In The New England Patriots: Bill Belichick may have simply made yet. Adam Sechefter reports the Washington Redskins have agreed to send Albert Haynesworth to New England Patriots to a fifth round. I still cannot understand why anyone would ever make a trade with the Patriots. It never ends well for the other team. We obviously know the story about Haynesworth. It is the best defensive tackle, and perhaps the most disruptive defender in the entire NFL, because he wants to be. On when he wants to be part of the problems have been throughout his career. That's what kept Tennessee Titans to give him the money two years ago and what his entire career in Washington, never to anything. My money was on Skins release Haynesworth and meets him in Philadelphia with Jim Washburn. Belichick has a story to make these things, so do not be surprised if Fat Albert turned in another All-Pro season in 2011.Washington Redskins Trade Albert Haynesworth Is In The New England Patriots

Conditionally To Acquire The Saints Bush Dolphins

Conditionally To Acquire The Saints Bush Dolphins: The last time RB Reggie Bush played in Miami, he won a Super Bowl. The Dolphins hope he can provide a alike affect for their franchise The Saints have agreed to trade the Number. Two pick of the 2006 draft to the Dolphins, pending Bush's agreement to a renegotiated contract with Miami. He's regular to make $11.8 million in the last season of his rookie deal, a very hefty payout considering his propensity for wound and the fact he's not an every-down back. FOXSports' Jay Glazer 1st broke the potential Bush deal early Thursday morning. Bush seemed to know his time in the Big Easy could be at an end in Apr later the Saints drafted Alabama RB Mark Ingram in the 1st round; Bush tweeted: "It's been fun New Orleans. He's the prototype change-of-pace back coveted in the modern NFL and a dangerous punt returner. He's averaged closely fifty-nine receptions per season over the course of his NFL career. But Bush has too rarely been the affect player many envisioned when he arrived into the league later a star-studded, Heisman Trophy-winning (since stripped) career at USC. Comparisons to Hall of Famer Gale Sayers have never real been justified. Bush has missed twenty games over the past 4 seasons dealing with various injuries and only played in 8 last year (broken leg). He's a middling career average of 4.o yards per carry (2,090 career rushing yards) and 33 NFL total TDs in his 5 seasons. Still, his field-flipping ability made defenses constantly account for him and helped open up the Saints offense for his teammates. Bush came through with 217 all-purpose yards and 2 TDs in New Orleans' divisional playoff win vs. Arizona in 2010, springboarding the Saints' Super Bowl XLIV drive which successfully ended at Miami's Sun Life Stadium vs. the Colts. The Dolphins could consider giving Bush a heavier workload with RBs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams both free agents. Pippa Middleton: Stylish, Corporate

Hollywood Gossips, Pippa Middleton
Crazy as it sounds in an era where people like Kim Kardashian become famous for no reason, then make a living off being famous, Pippa Middleton has a real job.

The 27-year-old  sister  of Kate Middleton works 2-3 days a week for her parents' event planning company Party Pieces, serving as editor of The Party Times.

Here, she's seen in her dark sunglasses as she began her workweek in London, looking professional in a dark outfit with a leather attaché case:

Pippa also works part-time in an event management role with Table Talk, a company based in London that organizes corporate events and parties.

In the August edition of Tatler, writer Annabel Rivkin examines the hoopla surrounding Pippa Middleton following Kate's April 29 royal wedding:

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that, post-Diana, we need to respect the Duchess of Cambridge's personal space. But it appears to be open season on her sister - will she blossom or buckle under the pressure?"
Blossom, it appears. Early and often.

Green Bay Packers

Green Bay Packers Nothing new to report, but I see the official list of Green Bay Packers unrestricted free agents were posted on NFL.com Monday. OL Jason Spitz, Daryn Colledge LG, CB Josh Bell, S Anthony Smith, FB Korey Hall, K Mason Crosby, LB Matt Wilhelm, WR James Jones, DE Cullen Jenkins, S Atari Bigby, FB John Kuhn, and running back Brandon Jackson. I would be surprised if you leave to go to Crosby, because if it does not return, so they have to sign someone else very quickly. Smith seemed confident it would have been re-signed, and returned as a special teams ace is a way. Otherwise, I have a strong sense are pushing hard to re-sign anyone else. While the race restricted free agent agreements with several players already in March, according to the terms of the new CBA, the Packers are not limited to any true free agents. Everything else has been signed, or the exclusive control of the team.Green Bay Packers
