PARTY AT CAVALLI DRESSED IN CAVALLI

Designers of every stripe have been feeling the pinch lately—some even canceling their F/W 2009 shows—but Roberto Cavalli isn't one of them. The designer has just opened his first nightclub in Florence, with plans to open others in Dubai and Milan, and the mood is typically bacchanalian. Housed in a deconsecrated church, the club features a lounge bar, 50-seat restaurant, and enough crystal and leopard-print to constitute a minor blasphemy. ("I know Florentines will criticize this decor because it's hard for them to get used to mixing modernity and tradition," the designer told WWD.) We're not sure what Florentines will think, but Dubai-dwellers can look forward to an even more extravagant space, set to open in February. "Excess is success," as Cavalli put it simply. (We assume that his '07 sentiment qualifies as tradition, not modernity.)
